Sixth edition

by Nicola Brace, Richard Kemp and Rosemary Snelgar

The interactive flash videos below will show you how to get started on SPSS and begin using some of the program's features.

Below are a series of interactive tutorials covering introductory topics that will teach you how to use SPSS, enter data and produce basic output. These tutorials are designed for beginners who are not familiar with the program. You do not need to work through the videos strictly in order, but if you are completely new to SPSS we recommend you start with one of the 'Getting Started' videos. You do not need to be working on a computer with SPSS installed, but you will need an up-to-date version of Flash Player.

1a. Getting Started

This tutorial will show you how to get started with SPSS; how to open the program and associated data files. This is recommended if you have not had any experience on SPSS and are fairly new to computers.

1b. Getting Started Alternatives

This tutorial will show you another method for opening SPPS and the associated data files.

2. Menus

This tutorial allows you to interactively explore the different menu options in SPSS. This should help you familiarise yourself with the program, and put your mind at ease about learning how to use SPSS.

3. Adding Variables

In this tutorial we will explore how to create data sets and add information to SPSS. If you are doing any work with SPSS the chances are that you will need to enter in your own data by adding variables to SPSS. If you are unfamiliar with the program, this is a good starting point.

4. Descriptives

This interactive tutorial will show you how to produce your first set of statistical output using SPSS.

5. Graphs

One of the best ways of understanding your data is to illustrate it graphically. This tutorial will talk you through how to use SPSS to produce the different types of graphs you are likely to need to explore simple datasets.
